● the coast is clear是一习惯用语，表示“没有被发现或被捉住的危险”。如：

They waited until the coast was clear before loading the stolen goods into the wan.

● 区别coast, shore, beach, bank和seaside：

coast仅指“海岸”，通常是和地理位置、天气、海防联系在一起的。如：

Madagascar is an island off the east coast of Africa.

马达加斯加使非洲东海岸的一个岛。

shore意思是“岸”，是和land“陆地”一样，是与水相对应而言的。一般来说，陆地与较大的水域（如洋、海、湖、大河等）的交接都可以称为shore。　如：

The shark was caught on the west shore of the Pacific.

那条鲨鱼是在太平洋西岸捕获的。

beach通常指涨潮时有水，退潮时无水，有沙子或卵石的平缓海（湖、河）滩，也常指可进行游泳、冲浪、日光浴等娱乐活动的地方。如：

We collected these pretty stones and shells on the beach.

这些好看的石子和贝壳是我们在海滩上捡的。

bank 一般指坡度较大或一下子突出水面的“河岸”。如：

The plant grows on the banks of the Nile. 

这种植物生长在尼罗河两岸。

seaside通常指“海滨地区，海滨城镇”，尤指假日旅游胜地。如：

This summer they are going to the seaside for their holidays.

今年夏天他们要到海滨度假。
